Tutorials

After I put together 2 1/2 inch squares to make half-square triangles, I always try to keep the triangles that I cut off the backs.  I recently learned that it's easier to sew a second line down the back while I make the HST so that I don't have to try and keep those little rascal triangles together.  Either way, I have started to put them together in their own little blocks.  Here's a tutorial for a 3 1/2 inch finished block if you're like me and can't through away the littlest pieces of fabric.

First, start off by trimming down the HSTs after you choose which method you'd like to sew them together.  I trimmed mine down to 1 1/2 inches each.  Excuse my first two pictures.  For some reason, the blog wants to turn them.  You get the gist of it.  Make sure you have your 45 degree angle lined up with the center seam, otherwise they won't end up correct.

Measure Twice!
Cut Once
TADA!  Not much left of scraps either!

Now onto the next step.  Cut four squares of coordinating fabric at 1 1/2 inches for the outside squares and one from a different fabric at 1 1/2 inches for the inside square.  I used the fabric that I had left over from the NYE mystery quilt that was out yesterday.

Next, set up you squares in the formation to make a friendship star.  I always have to look at a picture of the friendship star to get the setup correct.  I'm extremely visual!

Then sew them into rows.

Then sew the rows together.  It's totally your preference on how to press the seams.  I press towards the squares and then I press to the inside of the completed 3 1/2 inch square.  You may choose to press them open so that the block lays flatter.  After you give it a final trim (again utilize that 45 degree angle mark on your ruler and go corner to corner), you'll have a 3 1/2 inch unfinished square.  I have 92 more HSTs to put together, so I should have enough to make another baby quilt after I add borders or sashings! Enjoy!
